First Cory's and Great Shearwaters of the season

July 28, 2020

Monday 27th July produced the 'perfect' conditions for our big three target species, bringing us more Wilson's Petrels and our first big shearwaters of the year, with Cory's Shearwater and Great Shearwater both performing well. In total, we had:

- 4 Wilson's Petrels

- 150 European Storm-petrels

- 9 Cory's Shearwaters

- 3 Great Shearwaters

- 2 Sooty Shearwaters

We saw one Calonectris in rough sea and harsh light, IDed as Cory's/Scopoli's Shearwater (first photo). This bird looked smallish in field, with a slimmish bill and body; inner web p9 very long white tongue; perhaps whitish mottling basally p10; underwing, dark spot gpc10; lightly marked lesser secondary coverts.
